I know it makes me shallow and petty , but I could never truly love a girl called Harriet.
I just don’t like the name. It’s possible that with a hypothetical Harriet I could scrape some sort of shammy relationship togeather. I’d get along by calling with her ridiculous and almost rhyming pet names, like ‘Lafayette’. But sooner or later I’d be forced to meet her parents, or marry her, or in some other way face up to the reality of her ugly christening. Our bond would be soured from the outset, I wouldn’t be able to commit in the way she deserved, I’d call her ‘my girlfriend’ even with close mutual friends and wince when her name came up. We’d flounder, grow apart and eventually fail.
Anyway, ‘Ben’s Garden Blog’
I know this new name, ‘Mindweed’ sounds a lot more pretentious and East London, but you know, I do live in East London and I do like to check ‘Lafayette’ on gardening blogs…
A switch to the new also seems fitting as I have now finished my year at the Garden Museum, and have moved on to a real job with real wages and taxes and start times. Unfortunately my employer has made me sign a Non Disclosure Agreement so I won’t be able to put up any ‘this week in the garden we…’ posts. On the plus side this means I will be forced to waffle the void with endless horticultural irrelevancies and abstractions – plus ça change.
